140-megawatt Solar Power Projects Approved

The government has decided to allow more investment in renewable solar power in response to the increasing demand for energy consumption.

At a cabinet meeting on Friday, four solar projects were approved, with a total of 140 megawatts.

According to the Council of the Ministers, the four solar power approvals were for a 60-megawatt project in Battambang province, a 30-megawatt project in Pursat province, a 30-megawatt project in Oddar Meanchey province, and a 20-megawatt project in Svay Rieng province.

As planned, the four solar-energy projects will begin generating energy by the end of 2020.

H.E Victor Jona, spokesman for the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said the government is focusing on diversifying energy sources from multiple sources, and renewable energy is prioritised among them.

“Due to the shortage of power in this summer period, the government is diversifying energy sources from multiple sources, and generating energy from multiple sources to make the country not depend on hydropower generation which makes insufficient power for consumption,” he said.

Currently, Cambodia already operates two solar power plants in Svay Rieng province with a capacity of 10 megawatts and in Kampong Speu province with a capacity of 20 megawatts in the first phase and 60 megawatts in its second stage which is planned to begin generatating power in August.
