265mW Coal-Fired Power Plant in Oddar Meanchey Completion Delayed

Construction of a 265mW coal-fired power plant in Oddar Meanchey province will not be completed in late 20202 as scheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

HE Victor Jona, Director General of the Energy at the ministry, said that the delay was due to the disruption of construction materials import as well as the delay in the inspection by foreign consultants due to travel restrictions.

“As planned, the completion is set for the end of 2022, but it will be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said HE Victor Jona without providing the exact date to when the project will be delayed.

However, HE Victor Jona added that the delay will not cause any problems as currently, the demand for national electricity is declining.

Located in Trapeang Prasat district, Oddar Meanchey province, the 265-megawatt coal-fired power plant project is a US$294 million investment by Han Seng Coal Mine Co Ltd.

Once operational, the plant’s power generation will be linked to a substation in Siem Reap province. As of late 2020, the project has been at least 60% complete. (Read more)
