970 Investment Projects Worth US$23 Billion Approved in the Past Five Years

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has approved a total of 970 projects worth more than US$23 billion between 2013 and 2017, 35% of which is the infrastructure-related investment.

According to the Ministry of Information, this amount comprises of both new and expansion projects, which on average has helped to create about 219,000 new jobs for local people a year.

Infrastructure has accounted for the largest amount of investment with a total of 44 projects and worth about US$8 billion. Industry and the manufacturing sector are second at about 31% (US$7 billion), followed by tourism at around 22% (US$5 billion), and agriculture and agro-industry which represented approximately 12% (US$2 billion).

Based on the same report, the government of Cambodia has also approved the establishment of 22 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Cambodia, bringing the total number of SEZs in Cambodia to 47.

Regarding the infrastructure sector over the past decade, Cambodia has experienced a boom in construction projects. According to a report by the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), Cambodia has a total of 39,903 construction projects nationwide that have been worth more than US$37 billion between 2000 and 2017. Meanwhile, in the first six months of 2018, the Cambodian government has approved a total of 1,643 construction projects (read more).
