A firm in Pursat province turns rubbish into organic fertilizer

A company in Pursat Province is turning waste into organic fertilizer. Save the Lives (Cambodia) Co. Ltd. is licensed to clean, collect, transport, and store solid waste in the area, processing it into natural organic fertilizer.

The company’s chairman, Mr. Sy Len, mentioned that they received the right to manage solid waste starting mid-April 2024, covering all seven communes in Pursat City. They began producing organic fertilizer from waste in June 2024.

In just four months, the company has successfully recycled garbage collected from Pursat City, producing 450 tons of organic fertilizer under the brand name “Sovannaphum.” Mr. Len highlighted that their natural organic fertilizer improves soil quality and promotes healthy growth and high rice, vegetable, flower, and fruit plant yields.

Recently, HE Khvay Atitya, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, led a delegation to inspect the company’s production line. He commended the green business for contributing to socio-economic development and reducing waste through recycling, which also helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

“The recycling of waste into valuable products, such as organic fertilizers, is a sustainable business model that contributes to a greener future for Cambodia,” he said.

According to the Under Secretary of State, Cambodia generates nearly 4 million tons of garbage annually, or over 10,000 tons annually across the country. In Phnom Penh alone, between 3,000 and 5,000 tons of waste are produced daily, with 60% being food waste, 20% being plastic bags, and the remaining portion comprising rubber and paper waste.
