Understanding the Phnom Penh AGT development project

As Phnom Penh’s population continues to grow and the city is becoming busier, the government has been looking for solutions to overcome traffic congestion including the development of an automated guideway transit (AGT).

According to a recent project review report Construction & Property Magazine received recently, the government plans to spend about US$1,843 million to develop a Phnom Penh AGT which will stretch over 19 kilometres upon finalising the outcome of the study.

The line will start from Central Market to Chom Chao roundabout and link to another line connecting to Samrong terminal (along Charles de Gaulle Blvd, Monireth Blvd, Veng Sreng Road, Russian Federation Blvd, and National Road No. 4 to the Samrong terminal).

The line will be 15 kilometres on land and 4 kilometres underground with 18 stations on land and 2 stations underground.

The project has been studied by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) since September 2017 and on 8 February 2019, the project coordinating committee submitted the impact assessment report to the General Department of Impact Assessment.

JICA has recently completed the project, but no decision has been made yet regarding the results of the study. (Read more)
