ASEAN Tourism Rankings 2023: Malaysia Takes the Lead, Thailand Secures Second Spot, Followed by Vietnam

Southeast Asia experienced a stellar revival in its tourism sector throughout 2023, with Malaysia emerging as the frontrunner in welcoming international visitors, boasting an impressive 26 million foreign tourist arrivals from January to November. Following closely, Thailand welcomed approximately 24.6 million tourists during the same period, underscoring the robust rebound of its tourism sector.

Vietnam recorded notable international visitor numbers, hosting 12.6 million tourists throughout the year, representing around 70% of pre-pandemic levels. Noteworthy source countries for Vietnam included South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, the U.S., and Japan. This is according to Travel Daily News on 2 January 2024.

Recovery rates across Southeast Asian nations varied, with Cambodia achieving an outstanding 92.48% recovery. Vietnam and Indonesia demonstrated robust recovery rates at 82.25% and 74.11%, respectively, reflecting the region’s resilience in adapting to changing travel dynamics.

Southeast Asia, renowned for its diverse offerings, beckons travellers with immersive experiences. Vietnam’s cultural richness unfolds in activities like exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, engaging with local artisans, and touring historic sites like the Cu Chi tunnels. Thailand’s allure lies in a diverse tapestry of experiences, from the vibrancy of Bangkok to the serene landscapes of Chiang Mai and Kanchanaburi. Cambodia, with its iconic Angkor temples and southern beaches, offers a unique blend of history and relaxation, attracting discerning travellers.

The imminent reopening of China’s borders is anticipated to fuel Southeast Asia’s tourism recovery, with airlines gearing up for increased connections. This aligns with the International Monetary Fund’s optimistic projection of a robust Southeast Asian recovery in 2023. Technological advancements, including VR destination simulators, AI-driven personalised accommodations, and metasearch engines, are poised to redefine the travel experience, fostering competitiveness in this dynamic tourism landscape.
