Australia Grants Over AUD83.6 M to Foster Key Sectors in Cambodia

Australia has extended its support by providing an official development assistance of AUD83.6 million (over US$ 56.5 million). This commitment is aligned with Australia’s dedication to enhancing economic and social prosperity in Cambodia and marks a step towards reinforcing the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.

The development assistance, as outlined in a letter from Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and The Hon. Pat Conroy MP, Minister for International Development and the Pacific and Minister for Defence Industry of Australia, addressed to H.E Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia on July 24, 2023, includes AUD47.9 million allocated within bilateral frameworks. The remaining funds will be provided through global and regional programs.

Aligned with Cambodia’s National Strategic Development Plan, Australia’s development assistance aims to support the nation’s economic and social growth in various ways. Emphasis will be placed on increasing access to and improving the standards of public services, ensuring robust infrastructure connectivity, and facilitating reforms and investment activities. Particular attention will be given to the field of healthcare, along with the establishment of a social protection system that prioritizes the welfare of women and individuals with disabilities.

The AUD83.6 million development assistance package represents a substantial increase of AUD80.8 million compared to the previous year’s commitment. This indicates Australia’s deepened commitment to Cambodia’s progress and highlights the importance of fostering collaboration between the two nations in contributing to sustainable development.
