Rapid Population Growth Threatens 17 Ancient Khmer Temples by 2030

A new study by foreign researchers has revealed that by 2030, 17 ancient Khmer temples in the Angkor resort area will be severely impacted by rapid population growth. This alarming prediction was shared during a consultation on the “Management of Angkor World Heritage Site” in Siem Reap, attended by nearly 800 participants and chaired by His Excellency Say Sam Al, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction on 12 August 2024.

The study highlights a significant increase in the built-up area within Angkor, with nearly 13 square kilometres added from 2004 to 2017, covering both Area 1 and Area 2. This expansion, coupled with demographic pressure, has already escalated the number of affected temples from around 9 in 2017 to a projected 14 by 2025, and a potential 17 by 2030.

HE Say Sam Al underscored the critical need for stakeholders to prioritise conservation efforts and consider strategic demographic management to ensure sustainable development in the region. The UNESCO Representative in Cambodia also emphasised that preserving Angkor is vital, not only as a national treasure but as a cultural heritage of humanity, embodying the rich civilization of the Khmer nation.
