Cambodia Affirms Commitment to Air Quality Amidst Regional Collaboration

The Cambodian Ministry of Environment declared its readiness to collaborate with friendly nations and international organizations to exchange insights on preventing and mitigating air pollution. The ministry emphasized its dedication to the well-being of the people, both regionally and globally, according to the MoE’s press release issued on February 3, 2024.

Contrary to concerns raised by some sources and media outlets, the ministry stated that Cambodia’s air pollution levels range from 20 to 40 uq/m3, well below the World Health Organisation’s standard of 50 uq/m3. This affirmation aims to dispel any unwarranted anxieties surrounding the country’s air quality.

The statement comes in the wake of an unprecedented cooperative effort announced on 13 January 2024, by the Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr Sret Thavisin, to tackle smog issues in the border area with Cambodia. The outcomes of this collaboration are anticipated to be presented at a significant meeting with Samdech Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, on 7 February.

As part of this joint initiative, the Thai delegation has requested a visit to Sa Kaeo province, which borders Cambodia and faces substantial challenges from transboundary pollution, primarily stemming from wildfires in the region. (Read More)

In response, the Ministry of Environment highlighted the reduction in wildfires in Cambodia over the past few years, resulting in decreased levels of PM2.5 inert particles that fall below the standard level. The Royal Government’s measures, such as the use of EURO4 and EURO5 standard fuel, have significantly curtailed the emission of air pollutants.

Prioritising air quality protection, the Ministry of Environment remains actively engaged in the Blue Sky Campaign, aligning with the Royal Government’s 2023-2028 Circular-Sector Strategy and the initial phase of the Pentagonal Strategy.
