Cambodia Agrees in Principle to Japanese Smart Cities Network

The Cambodian government has approved in principle the Japanese Smart Cities Network initiative, according a letter by the Council of Ministers released on 11 March 2019.

In a letter sent to H.E Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), the Council of Ministers wrote “the Royal Government agrees in principle to the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) to establish an ASEAN-Japan Smart Cities Network”.

A Smart City is a sustainable urban development which incorporates with ICT to address urban problems such as housing, traffic congestion and the environment. For Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Battambang are the three provinces included in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network.

Speaking to a recent business forum, H.E Yuki Fumihiko, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan said that to achieve sustainable urban development we should focus on sectors such as transportation, greenery, energy saving and the use of solar power, as well as recycling.

In addition to the establishment of the Smart Cities Network, the same letter also stated that, “the government agrees in principle to the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) to establish a Public-Private Platform on the ASEAN-Japan Urban Development.

Meanwhile, the first Cambodia-Japan Public-Private Platform was held on 27 February 2019. (Read more)

H.E Chea Sophara, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of MLMUPC said during the recent forum that “the selection of Cambodia as the first country among ASEAN countries for the first Public-Private Platform on Urban Development shows investors’ [Japanese] confidence in the potential of Cambodia’s economy”.
