Cambodia & 12 Nations Unite to Combat GHG Emissions Through Sustainable Waste Management

Cambodia, alongside a consortium of 12 nations, is embarking on a collaborative mission to tackle greenhouse gas emissions by implementing the principles of the 4Rs (Reducing, Reusing, Recycling, and Recovering) in solid waste management. This pioneering effort was unveiled at the “Strengthening the Implementation of Solid Waste Management and the Path to the Circular Economy” workshop, held on 5-8 September 2023.

The workshop convened experts from a diverse range of countries, including Cambodia, Laos, India, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan. The central focus of this gathering was to foster innovative approaches to solid waste management and promote awareness about the pivotal role the 4Rs principles play in curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

This international symposium facilitated the exchange of insights garnered from successful projects implemented across various nations. In-depth discussions encompassed regulatory frameworks, the roles and responsibilities of local authorities, and collaborative strategies involving citizens and the private sector to ensure the effective execution of solid waste management initiatives.

Crucially, the Circular Economy concept was underlined during the workshop. This approach aims to transform solid waste into valuable resources, aligning economic growth with a reduction in waste generation. It stands as a cornerstone of sustainable development, contributing significantly to the 2030 economic landscape.
