ASEAN Moves Forward on Regional Air & Sea Rescue Agreement

The 11th ASEAN Transport Forum on Air Search and Rescue by Sea, held in Phnom Penh on 14 August 2024, gathered representatives from ASEAN member countries and various relevant ministries and institutions to discuss a critical agreement on air and sea search and rescue operations. The forum underscored the urgency of solidifying regional cooperation to enhance ASEAN’s capacity for coordinated search and rescue efforts, as reported by HE Ieng Veng Sun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

During the forum, HE Ieng Veng Sun highlighted the importance of finalising an agreement that was initially approved by ASEAN Transport Ministers in early 2023 in Indonesia. Member countries are currently completing internal procedures to secure approval from their respective heads of state and government for the ratification of this agreement, which aims to standardize and strengthen the air and sea rescue capabilities across ASEAN.

Ratification of this agreement is seen as a pivotal step not only for bolstering intra-ASEAN cooperation but also for enabling collaborative efforts with dialogue and development partners. These partners can contribute valuable expertise and resources, enhancing the effectiveness of search and rescue missions throughout the region.

Cambodia and other ASEAN member states have expressed their commitment to cooperating fully to expedite the implementation of the agreement, reinforcing ASEAN’s collective readiness to handle air and sea emergencies more efficiently and effectively.
