Siem Reap Pioneers Green Initiative: Collaborative Efforts with Germany to Create a Plastic-Free Model City

Siem Reap, the jewel of ASEAN tourism, is embarking on a groundbreaking venture towards becoming a plastic-free model city, and the collaboration between the Siem Reap Provincial Administration and the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) is at the forefront of this transformative initiative. This revelation unfolded during a seminar titled “Reducing the Use of Single-used Plastic Products through Traditional Practices” on 7 November 2023.

Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province, Mr Yun Linne, emphasised the urgent need for solutions in response to the escalating use of plastic products. The workshop aimed to enlighten businesses in the food and beverage sector about waste management while fostering awareness to curtail the use of disposable plastic products across all establishments in Siem Reap, including restaurants, cafes, and food outlets.

“Our goal is to gather insights from business owners and stakeholders, fostering discussions on challenges and proposing viable solutions to minimize the use of single-use plastic products. This workshop is a pivotal step towards promoting a comprehensive reduction strategy and ultimately eliminating the use of disposable plastics,” stated Mr Yun Linne.

Frank Jattke, Head of the ASEAN Working Group on Cambodia at the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ), underscored the significance of reducing the traditional use of single-use plastic products in homes, restaurants, hotels, and urban markets. He emphasised the importance of choosing environmentally friendly alternatives to protect the planet and its water sources while promoting biodiversity.

The Siem Reap Provincial Administration, in collaboration with GIZ and the Siem Reap Tourism Club Association, is diligently working towards effective solid waste management in the city. Siem Reap, recognised as a pioneer province, is actively studying and implementing innovative waste management practices to serve as a benchmark for other cities. This collaborative effort is poised to influence and inspire sustainable waste management practices across ASEAN member countries.
