Cambodia Launches Ambitious Electric Vehicle Development Policy with Nearly 3,000 Vehicles Registered

The Government of Cambodia has launched the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles Cambodia 2024-2030, with nearly 3,000 electric vehicles currently registered, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport on 25 June 2024.

The policy aims to promote and guide the growth of the electric vehicle sector in Cambodia, featuring specific measures and clear mechanisms to be implemented within a defined timeframe. This initiative encompasses various types of electric vehicles, including electric cars, tricycles, and motorcycles.

A report from the same source highlights a notable increase in vehicle usage across the country, particularly motorcycles and cars. Out of the total 7 million vehicles, motorcycles account for about 85%, passenger cars for about 10%, and heavy fuel vehicles (trucks and machinery) for about 5%.

Currently, the registered electric vehicles in Cambodia include 914 motorcycles, 440 tricycles, and 1,614 cars. Notably, pure electric vehicles emit nearly 40% fewer toxic gases compared to gasoline-powered cars, while electric motorcycles significantly reduce toxic gas emissions compared to their fuel-powered counterparts.

The introduction of this policy is a significant step towards reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable transportation in Cambodia.
