Cambodia Plans to Transform Riverside Towns into Vibrant Villages

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction of Cambodia has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at developing towns along the Mekong River and around Tonle Sap Lake into vibrant resort villages. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism and improve local economies in riverside provinces.

During a recent meeting held on 8 April 2025, which HE Say Samal chaired, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, suggestions were made for the strategic location of tourist ports along these iconic rivers. HE Say Samal emphasised the importance of cooperation and input from local provinces, relevant ministries, and organisations, including the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Association, to ensure the project’s success.

The plan envisions transforming towns into serene, economically viable hubs that reflect the unique character of each area. With a focus on sustainable urban development, the initiative aims to boost tourism and improve residents’ quality of life.

In alignment with this development push, Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen recently announced an additional project to create public parks, earmarking over 70 hectares in the Kob Srov Dam area for this purpose. This initiative is designed to foster healthy competition among provinces and enhance community life while creating green spaces for residents and visitors alike. (Read more)

As these plans take shape, the Royal Government is optimistic about the potential for economic growth and the profound positive impact on local communities. The collaboration of various stakeholders will be crucial in bringing this vision to fruition.
