The government has requested South Korea to help construct a new bridge in Phnom Penh, according to the transport minister.

Speaking to reporters on 31 March 2019, H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) said that “he [Prime Minister] has also requested Korea to help construct a bridge in Phnom Penh because there is the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge, the Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge, but there is no Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge yet”.

Phnom Penh currently has two bridges crossing the Tonle Sap River namely the US$27.5 million Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge (Chroy Changvar 2), and the Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge, which is currently under a renovation costing around US$33 million. (Read more)

“So, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, he requested already, so we prepare, maybe, we will have a Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge,” he said.

However, H.E Sun Chanthol has not yet confirmed the exact location of the new bridge, but Korea has expressed interested in the construction project for the bridge connecting Chroy Changvar to Svay Chrum in Lavea Em District, Kandal Province.

According to MPWT H.E Vasim Sorya, construction of the bridge project may cost more than US$30 million because it will cross the Mekong River so the length and height will need to be greater than those bridges that cross the Tonle Sap River such as the Chroy Changvar Friendship bridges.
