Cambodia Sees Surge in Electric Vehicle Registrations in 2025

In a significant boost for environmental initiatives, Cambodia has registered over 10,500 electric vehicles (EVs) in just nine months, marking a notable increase in the adoption of eco-friendly transportation options. From January to September 2025, the country recorded a total of 10,568 electric vehicles, according to a statement made by His Excellency Phon Rim, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, on October 14, 2025.

The breakdown of registrations included 7,187 electric cars, 671 tricycles, and 2,710 motorcycles, highlighting the diverse range of electric mobility options now available to Cambodian citizens. The trend toward EVs has shown significant momentum, with a remarkable 5,571 vehicles registered in just the last eight months of this year alone.

In light of this growing popularity, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport is contemplating enhancements to the vehicle registration system, including the addition of special markings on license plates for EVs. This initiative is part of a broader strategy and is expected to be rolled out by 2026.

This growth aligns with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s national policy aiming to advance the electric vehicle sector from 2024 to 2030, which seeks to promote the usage of over 770,000 electric vehicles by 2030. With these steps, Cambodia is firmly positioning itself on the path toward sustainable transportation and a greener future.
