Cambodia’s Business Landscape Faces Dual Trends: Drop in New Registrations 17%, Surge in Eliminations 32%

Cambodia’s entrepreneurial environment is undergoing a marked shift, with the Ministry of Commerce reporting 9,530 new company registrations in 11 months of 2024. This figure represents a decline of 17.17% compared to the same period last year, highlighting growing challenges in the business sector.

Concurrently, company eliminations surged by 32.78%, totalling 1,284 businesses removed from the official registry. These findings were published by the Ministry of Commerce on 23 December 2024.

Breaking down the new registrations, capital companies demonstrated resilience, with 4,725 registrations reflecting an 8% increase. However, other sectors faced significant hurdles: foreign commercial companies saw a 16.92% drop with only 54 new entries, and private enterprises suffered the most, witnessing a sharp 32.27% decline. Joint ventures remained relatively stable, showcasing their adaptability in fluctuating market conditions.

Amid the challenges, companies are focusing on financial strategies to secure their foundations. Applications for capital reserves increased by 10.39%, with 6,532 businesses seeking financial backing. In contrast, individual enterprises struggled, with reserve capital applications plummeting by 33.02%, totalling 5,321. This divergence underscores the contrasting resilience of company types within Cambodia’s evolving economic landscape.

The surge in eliminations also suggests heightened competition and operational difficulties within the local market. While Cambodia continues to attract entrepreneurial activity, the elevated removal rate points to a growing need for businesses to adapt swiftly to market conditions.
