Chinese firm to build electric power project in Sihanoukville

China National Machinery Industry Corporation (Sinomach) through its subsidiary CNEG  signed a cooperation agreement on 12 August with Cambodia’s SNTP Company on a grid substation and transmission line project in Sihanoukville.

According to a press release from the Sinomach group, the project will include the construction of two new Geographic Information System (GIS) substations, a new 27-kilometre 230kV and 115kV transmission line, as well as the expansion of a substation.

During the signing ceremony held in Beijing, Chairman of CNEG Lu Wenjun pledged that his firm will bring the best technology and management into the project to provide the best service for Cambodia.

“We will ensure smooth progress as we always did in the previous projects in Cambodia. I believe this project will greatly relieve local power shortages and further boost the kingdom’s economic development as well,” said Mr Lu.

However, the press release did not mention any details on the timeline of the project or its exact location.

Since 2007, Sinomach group has strongly cooperated with Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) working on a number of projects in Cambodia including the well-known Tatay Hydropower Plant in Koh Kong province, the trunk lines and substations of Cambodia’s national power grid, as well as several expansions of rural power grids.

In Cambodia, electricity production mostly depends on hydro and coal with some import sfrom Viet Nam, Thailand, and the Lao PDR.
