Dublin Leads ‘Smart City’ Revolution with Bentley and NVIDIA Digital Twin

Bentley Systems and NVIDIA are at the forefront of a global movement to make cities smarter, safer, and more livable, a shift highlighted at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona this week (November 4–6).

The Irish capital, Dublin, is testing a new, cutting-edge digital twin built using Bentley Systems’ Cesium geospatial platform and NVIDIA Omniverse. This AI-powered solution is capable of aggregating multiple real-time data feeds to enhance urban planning and city management.

The digital twin project uses data from VivaCity’s AI traffic sensors (powered by NVIDIA Jetson and NVIDIA Metropolis) to monitor and identify “close passes” for cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians. This ability to analyze real-time road user behavior is key to answering critical urban questions, such as:

Nicola Graham, smart city program manager for the Dublin City Council, emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating that creating a smart city is “about working with private industry, it’s about working with universities, and it’s about working with people to try and understand what their needs are and to try and utilize technology, to try and make the city more livable.”

Dublin is not alone; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Raleigh, North Carolina, are also showcasing their physical AI advancements at the Congress, leveraging NVIDIA AI and accelerated compute.

NVIDIA is accelerating this trend by offering the NVIDIA Blueprint for smart city AI, a reference workflow covering the simulation, training, and deployment of AI agents. Bentley Systems is a critical contributor to this blueprint, specializing in simulating city data for AI training and partnering with vendors like VivaCity to deliver a complete, end-to-end smart city workflow.

The collaboration follows years of work between Bentley and Dublin, including the city hosting Bentley’s first Urban Technology Challenge this spring, which tasked participants with using digital twins and generative AI to rethink critical city infrastructure, mobility, and flood resilience.
