European Union Organises Seminar on Problems Faced by Female Construction Workers

The European Union recently organised a half-day seminar to discuss the problems and challenges faced by female construction workers in Cambodia.

Held on 27 September, 2018 at Tonle Bassac II Restaurant, the seminar was attended around 40 people including representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, Care Cambodia, Australian Development Cooperation, construction companies, and female construction workers.

Under the theme “Social dialogue between female construction workers and other relevant stakeholders”, the event aimed at giving opportunities for female construction workers to give voice to the challenges and problems they have experienced at the workplace.

According to theparticipating female construction workers, those problems include 1) Unequal wages between females and males 2) Lack of proper contracts between workers and companies 3) Irresponsibility when accidents occur at the workplace, including no insurance coverage by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

After an extensive debate about these problems, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and participating construction companies committed to continue finding solutions in order to improve the working conditions, health and safety for female construction workers.
