Four cement factories in Cambodia are capable in producing about 7 million tons per year to respone to the demand of the increasing construction sector in the country, according to Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Speaking at the 7th extractive industrial governance forum recently, Mr Peng Navuth, under-secretary of state of Ministry of Mines and Energy, said the increasing demand of cement products is due to the increase of construction sector.

However, Mr Navuth said the ministry does not have specific figure of cement usage currently and he urged for studies about the real usage of cement products.

“We regret that we don’t have study over the specific data on the real demand. We have not conducted study over this,” Mr Navuth said.

The four factories are Kampot Cement, Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory Co, Ltd, Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation, and Battambang Conch Cement Co Ltd.

Mr Sorn Seap, founder and CEO of Key Real Estate, echoed the remark, saying that the increasing of construction sector has boosted high demand of cement product, plus other building materials.

“We see there are high demand, construction works are everywhere. If we see in the Bavet area, Kampongsom [Sihanoukville] and Poipet city, the construction activities have been seen actively,” Mr Seap said.

“Now, we also observe of shortage of sand, steel, because there are too many constructions,” Mr Seap added.

SCG a major supplier of construction materials in Cambodia, recently announced an increase in annual sales revenue in its operations in Cambodia. Revenue from sales last year reached US$396 million, up 15% from 2017, according to a statement from SCG on Wednesday 6 February.

Report from Ministry of Land Management and Urban Construction in 2019 showed that 2,367 construction projects were approved in 2018, with total investment of $5 billion.
