Cutting-edge Waste Management: Kampong Thom Province Unveils US$4 Million Landfill Facility

Kampong Thom province proudly presents its state-of-the-art landfill facility, a groundbreaking project worth over US$4 million, aimed at revolutionizing sanitation and environmental management services surrounding the pristine Tonle Sap Lake. The auspicious inauguration ceremony, held under the distinguished presence of HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, took place on 26 June 2023, marking a significant leap forward in waste management practices.

Commencing construction on 7 July 2021 and completing on 28 November 2022, the project was realized with an investment of $4,629,399 under the auspices of the Phase 2 project to enhance urban environmental management around the Tonle Sap Lake, with financial support from the esteemed Development Bank (ADB).

Situated in the idyllic Trapeang Russey village, Trapeang Russey commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province, the landfill spans an impressive area of 14.73 hectares out of a total of 19.76 hectares, ensuring ample space for efficient waste disposal. With a capacity to hold approximately 97,886 cubic meters of waste, the pit will be filled to a height of 10 cubic meters from the mouth, providing a sustainable solution for a staggering 20 years to benefit approximately 36,478 residents in and around Kampong Thom provincial town.

This visionary landfill facility sets new benchmarks in waste management, employing cutting-edge technologies and adhering to stringent environmental standards. Its implementation heralds a remarkable milestone in Kampong Thom province’s commitment to promoting cleanliness, safeguarding natural resources, and fostering a sustainable future.
