Giant Timber Firm to Plant 10m Trees on 8,500 ha in Cambodia

Think Biotech, one of the largest timber companies in Cambodia, has revealed their plan to plant 10 million commercial trees on a total area of over 8,500 hectares within this year, according to a Ministry of Environment press release issued on 25 May.

Think Biotech (Cambodia) Co Ltd director Lu Chu Chang said that the 10 million seedlings will be planted from May to August of 2021. Meanwhile, by the end of 2025, the firm is aiming for 100 million to 120 million seedlings planted on over 100,000 hectares of land.

Mr Li added that between 2018 and 2020, the company already planted about 3.6 million seedlings on a total area of 34,007 hectares of state degraded forest land and forest restoration zones in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces.

“The reason that the firm wants to grow more trees is in response to the increasing wood demand in various sectors, especially in the construction sector,” said Mr Li.

Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra said that the government has been encouraging more and more investment in commercial wood plantations to help create more greenery and also create a sufficient source of wood for sustainable use.

He added that from 2016 to 2020, Cambodia has sold a total of more than US$11.6 million in carbon credits from forest conservation and community development in protected areas.
