Government Reviews CLV Triangular Zone Development

The Cambodian government has reviewed the latest progress in the CLV (Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam) triangular zone, saying that significant progress has been made in development on the economy, social initiatives, and security along the border.

In remarks shared in a meeting led by H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce and Chairman of National Commission for Development Cooperation Works Coordination for CLV with H.E. Chheang Vun, permanent member of the National Assembly of Cambodia and chairman of the National Assembly’s Commission of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Information and Media.

H.E. Pan Sorasak said in the meeting that through the CLV cooperation, there has been positive progress in the development of the sectors of the economy, tourism, and in particular security along the borders, according to a post on the National Assembly of Cambodia’s Facebook page.

“The development of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam zone aims to establish infrastructure which is favourable to culture, tourism, and mutual understanding between people and the people in the three countries and which is moving forward to strengthen and modernise connectivity, agriculture, power, and goods and travel facilitation across borders,” the post quoted H.E. Pan Sorasak as saying.

The Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Seang Thay highly valued the progress of development in the CLV zone, saying that through the cooperation of CLV countries, the triangular zone has become a new area with infrastructure built to ease connectivity and influx of tourist flows.

“Much progress has been noted. Previously, the area was difficult, so we have cooperated among the three countries to help each other,” Mr Thay said. “We have seen that there have been changes in the area including building infrastructure for connectivity, a crackdown on drug trafficking, a flow of labour forces and health cooperation because the area is far from the capacity of Phnom Penh.”

Mr Thay predicted that the CLV zone, particularly on the Cambodian side –in Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Stung Treng, and Kratie provinces – will soon become one of the areas with high potential for investment.

The CLV triangular cooperation was initially established in 1999.
