Government Terminates Royal Group’s National Railway Contract

The Royal Government of Cambodia has decided to end the contract of Cambodia Royal Railway for the operation of Cambodia’s railway, according to an announcement by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister at the 18th ‘Government-Private Sector Forum’ held at the Peace Palace on 29 March 2019.

“The Royal Government has decided to terminate the business of Royal Railway in the railway operation, and the Royal Government will immediately hand over the railway to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, to manage before putting out for tender” said Samdech.

Samdech also added that the government will select qualified and experienced companies to collaborate with the Royal Government to upgrade the railway system to international standard with advanced technology.

The decision comes after Cambodia Royal Railway did not expand its business potential and did not invest in engines, carriages or equipment to meet the needs of customers, including carriers, importers, merchants and travellers.

Cambodia Royal Railway took over the concession from Australian company Toll in 2014 to operate the national rail network.
