GOV’T allocated land 5 ha for RUPP to build a new modern campus near Win-Win Monument

The Royal Government through ministry of economy and finance plans to build another new campus of Royal University of Phnom Penh, on 5-hectares of land near the Win-Win Monument in response to the University’s growth and needs.

According to the official Facebook page of H.E Dr. Chet Chealy, Rector of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, on 9th June 2020.

For the detail and budget to building the new campus is not yet available, however, the rector reveals some options of different building architectural plans of the new campus, the comparison between the Khmer style roof architectural basis and other one is a bit more modernized, which he called ‘smart campus’.

“We are currently working on a master plan to develop this new campus and turn it into a modern learning center,” he commented.

According to the same source, the architectural styles of these new campuses was also designed by the RUPP’s team of Faculty of Engineering department itself.

Notably, Royal University of Phnom Penh is the oldest and largest state higher education institution in Cambodia, which was established since 1960. It has two main campuses. The first one is located on the Russian Federation Road, near the 7 January Flyover and the second one is located next to Royal Academy of Cambodia.

It is reminded that the Building of the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) in the first RUPP campus is designed by Cambodian most famous architect, Dr. Vann Molyvann.

In one of his interviews before his death, this masterful Khmer architect once had said “…the role that our construction has to play is to make it more culturally accessible. If built for Cambodians, we need to understand how Cambodians live; we need to think about its geographical characteristics, whether it exposes to light or wind direction or not. The architect must be clear about his or her duties that they are not building for themselves, but for others who live there. So, one must be aware, listen to others before you build it. In short, think clearly and build.”
