Gov’t Cancels Multiple Infrastructure Development Projects in Kandal Province

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) has announced the cancellation of multiple infrastructure development projects in Kandal province, citing that those projects are flawed and could affect private property ownership.

This is according to an MLMUPC’s letter dated 11 July 2021, which was sent to the Kandal provincial administration.

The letter, however, did not specify the number of projects or what types of projects will be cancelled from the new Kandal land-use & infrastructure master plan.

MLMUPC only gave the reasons that the cancellation was made after receiving many complaints from locals requesting the government to modify some infrastructure projects such as canals and roads as they affect their residences and private properties.

After consideration, MLMUPC found that the new infrastructure projects are indeed flawed and do not cautiously take into account geographic impacts into the master plan. Thus, MLMPUC would like to request the Kandal governor to cancel and redesign following the previous land-use & infrastructure master plan.

Regarding the matter, Dr Hong Vannak of the Royal Academy of Cambodia told Cambonomist that this cancellation definitely affects the real estate sector.

“Sometimes, projects are leaked, then some real estate companies go and buy some lands or properties there hoping for profits. So, as the projects are cancelled, they might no longer earn profits,” said Dr Vannak.

However, this economist is optimistic that before deciding to do something, the government has already studied it in detail.
