Gov’t to Compile Development Masterplan for Koh Kong’s Offshore Islands

The Koh Kong Provincial Administration and relevant authorities will start inspecting, collecting data, and compiling a development masterplan for more than 23 islands in Koh Kong province, to enhance the management system, promote tourism, and attract more investors.

The action plan was set during a meeting of relevant officials on 25 November, chaired by Provincial Deputy Governor Ouk Pheaktra.

According to the meeting’s outcome, each assigned unit will inspect at each island by collecting necessary data such as its coordinates, geographical views, photos, and videos.

Meanwhile, a special team from the Provincial Department of Land Management, Urban Planning, Construction and Cadastral will also go on-site to collect the data using Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) method.

The date of each island inspection will be set later by the provincial administrative authorities.

According to Deputy Director of the Koh Kong Provincial Department of Land Management Heang Bonna, in the first phase, the islands that the government is interested in are Pineapple Island, Koh Smach and Koh Kong Krao.

He told the Phnom Penh Post that of all 23 islands, to date, only Koh Sdach is being developed by the private sector. Thus, the master plan with the island data may help the authorities to learn more about the investment potential of other islands.
