IAEA Grants Cambodia Cutting-Edge Nuclear Technology for National Heritage Restoration

The Department of Archaeology and Prehistory within the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has received a powerful new tool – the Leica ScanStation P40/P30 3D Laser Scanner. This advanced equipment was generously granted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as part of the TC Project: KAM1002 on the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Property.

The significant handover took place on 14 August 2023 and was coupled with comprehensive training conducted by Leica experts. This capacity-building effort empowered six officials with the skills needed to proficiently operate and utilize the laser scanner for analysis, restoration, and maintenance of the nation’s treasured cultural heritage.

The one-day training session encompassed hands-on instruction, providing invaluable insights into the optimal usage of the Leica ScanStation. The experts guided participants through the equipment’s functionality, allowing them to gain practical experience at both the National Museum and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.

Mr. Leng Vito, the Acting Director of the Department of Archaeology and Prehistory, serves as the project implementation officer for TC Project: KAM1002. This comprehensive initiative, spanning four years from 2020 to 2024, underscores the commitment to safeguarding Cambodia’s historical legacy through the innovative application of nuclear technology.

The project’s scope primarily revolves around equipping officials with the necessary skills to employ atomic technology effectively in the preservation and protection of cultural heritage. The training also extends to facilitating short-term study trips abroad and providing access to cutting-edge equipment for the analysis, restoration, and conservation of national cultural artifacts.

With this advanced technology at its disposal, the Department of Archaeology and Prehistory is well-positioned to make remarkable strides in cultural heritage restoration, ensuring that Cambodia’s legacy remains safeguarded for future generations.
