Japan Extends $52.6 Million Loan to Upgrade and Enhance NR5 (Prek Kdam-Thla Mam) Infrastructure

In a significant show of international cooperation, the Japanese Government has granted a substantial loan of 7,205 million yen (equivalent to approximately $52.6 million) to support the implementation of the transformative “NR No. 5 Rehabilitate and Upgrade Project on the Prek Kdam-Thla Mam Road Phase 4.”

This agreement was solidified through the exchange of letters and related documents, underscoring the commitment of both nations to fostering sustainable infrastructure development. The signing ceremony, graced by the presence of HE Prak Sokhon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and HE UENO Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, took place on 24th May 2023.

The comprehensive project, aimed at enhancing the southern section of NR No. 5 (Prek Kdam-Thla Mam), has already witnessed substantial progress with the opening of both sides of the road to traffic in January. This remarkable feat was accomplished through an initial investment of over $260 million, contributing to improved connectivity and ensuring smoother transportation for the people of Cambodia. The additional loan provided by Japan further demonstrates their commitment to supporting the development and modernization of vital transportation infrastructure within the country.

In parallel to the loan allocated for the national highway project, Japan has also dedicated 366 million yen (approximately $2.67 million) towards the implementation of the noteworthy “Human Resource Development Scholarship Project.” This initiative underscores Japan’s unwavering commitment to fostering educational opportunities and cultivating a skilled workforce in Cambodia.

The infusion of financial support from Japan highlights the enduring partnership between the two nations and their shared vision for sustainable development.
