Japan Commits Nearly USD 11 Million to Support Cambodia’s Techo Peace Museum Project

In a significant diplomatic move, the Japanese government has granted a total of 1.466 billion yen, approximately USD 11 million, to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) to bolster two critical projects to enhance mine action capabilities in Cambodia.

The announcement was made during a signing ceremony on 20 March 2025. HE Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, exchanged letters formalising the grant.

Project Highlights:

1. Strengthening Capacity for South-South Cooperation: The first project, with a total budget of 1.166 billion yen (over USD 8.4 million), focuses on enhancing CMAC’s technical capabilities by acquiring essential demining equipment and vehicles. This initiative aims to support training programs for mine action experts at both the regional and international levels.
2. Techo Peace Museum Construction: The second project involves an additional grant of 300 million yen (over USD 2 million) to fund the construction of the Techo Peace Museum and a training centre. The total budget for this initiative now stands at 2.751 billion yen (nearly USD 20 million). The museum, designed to be the largest historical museum in the world and shaped like an anti-personnel landmine, will be constructed in Trapeang Thom commune, Prasat Bakong district of Siem Reap province.

Spanning an impressive 52 metres by 52 metres and standing 17 metres high, the Techo Peace Museum is set to serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of landmines and the importance of peace. The construction is expected to take three years and will encompass additional external structures designed to enhance the visitor experience.

This substantial investment underscores Japan’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s ongoing efforts in mine clearance and education about the dangers of landmines, contributing to a safer and more harmonious future for the Cambodian people.
