Japan Expands Investment in Waste Recycling in Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone

In a significant move for environmental sustainability, Japanese company GOMI RECYCLE announced plans to further expand its investment in waste recycling within the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone. The focus of this initiative will be on collecting plastic waste and transforming it into souvenirs and other useful items, such as furniture.

During a meeting on October 28, 2025, GOMI RECYCLE’s President, Mr. Okumura Yusuke, conveyed the company’s commitment to enhancing its operations in Cambodia. He emphasized confidence in the Cambodian government’s efforts to foster a favorable investment climate, prompting the decision to intensify the collection of plastic waste from businesses operating in the zone.

His Excellency Chea Wutthy, Secretary General of the Cambodia Investment Committee of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, expressed strong support for this investment expansion. He praised GOMI RECYCLE’s initiative, highlighting its potential to create additional job opportunities for the Cambodian workforce while contributing to environmental clean-up efforts.

GOMI RECYCLE is already engaged in waste recycling activities in the special economic zone, previously having converted plastic waste into various products, including souvenirs and furniture. This latest investment signals a promising step forward in sustainable waste management practices in Cambodia.
