Japan Grants USD 7.8 Million to Enhance Mine Clearance Efforts in Cambodia

On 6 June 2025, the Japanese government announced a significant grant of 1.166 billion yen (approximately USD 7.8 million) aimed at bolstering the operations of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC). The funding, which will enhance mine clearance activities in Cambodia, was formalised during a signing ceremony held at CMAC headquarters in Phnom Penh.

The ceremony was attended by HE Heng Ratana, the Royal Government Delegate overseeing CMAC, Mr. Sanui Kazumasa, Director General of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cambodia, and Mr. Fujisaki Seiyu, Project Director of the Japan International Cooperation System Consulting Company (JICS).

The grant will specifically be used to procure advanced technical equipment, including robotic mine-clearing machines, ALIS demining equipment, barrier vehicles, and transport vehicles for heavy demining machinery. This investment is expected to significantly modernise CMAC’s capabilities in mine clearance, enhancing safety and efficiency in the process.

This support follows a previous commitment made on 20 March 2025, when Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Mr. Ueno Atsushi, signed a grant of over USD 10 million for technical equipment and expertise development related to demining efforts. (Read more)
