Japan Pledges to Continue Supporting SHV Port & Other Infrastructure Development

The Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia has pledged to continue to help develop the deep-sea port and waste management infrastructure in Sihanoukville, in response to the province’s potential growth in the future.

Ambassador Mikami Masahiro made the remarks during a meeting and site visit at the port with the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Chairman & CEO Chhun Lou Kim on Monday 15 November.

Both parties exchanged views on the current situation, future development plan for the port, Japanese ODA projects, and the utilisation of the special economic zone.

“We are looking for continuing our cooperation for further development of the Port,” said HE Mikami Masahiro.

In phase 1, Japan will provide a loan of US$200 million to expand the port depth to 14.5m and length to 350m. The construction was first scheduled to begin this year, but was postponed to 2022 as the layout design has yet to be completed. (Read more)

According to the 2020-2030 plan, the Sihanoukville seaport expansion project has a total of five phases.

In addition to inspecting the port, the Japanase Ambassador also visited several waste management sites in Sihanoukville together with delegations from the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and UNDP Cambodia.

Japan is also committed to supporting the sea plastic waste management project by UNDP and MoE to help protect the environment and increase the city’s beauty.
