Japan Pledges USD 900,000 for Bayon Temple Restoration: A Cultural Revival in Cambodia

To significantly boost cultural heritage preservation, the Royal Government of Japan has committed an additional grant of USD 900,000 for the Bayon Temple Preservation and Restoration Project. This funding will support a vital three-year initiative to revitalise this iconic landmark from 2025 to 2028. The announcement was made on December 13, 2024, during a plenary session of the International Committee for the Coordination of the Protection and Development of the Angkor and Sambor Prei Kuk Historical Areas (ICC-Angkor and Sambor Prei Kuk).

Kawase Taro, Project Director for Multicultural Cooperation at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the significance of the grant. “This additional funding will play a crucial role in ensuring the preservation and restoration of the Bayon temple, allowing future generations to appreciate its historical and cultural importance,” said Taro.

The allocation is part of the Japan-ASEAN (JASA) project, which has been active in the Angkor area since 1994. Previous projects have included renovating the library south of Angkor Wat and building a legacy of preservation that continues with the Bayon temple restoration.

As one of Cambodia’s most famous monuments, the Bayon temple—a UNESCO World Heritage site—draws visitors from around the globe, showcasing its stunning stone carvings and historical significance. With Japan’s ongoing support, this project promises to protect the structure itself and enhance the overall cultural landscape of the Angkor resort area, ensuring that its rich history remains accessible for years to come.
