Japan Provides Jpy100 Million for Home Restoration in Tbong Khmum

The Japanese government and the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) have signed an exchange note on house restoration for Cambodians living in Tbong Khmum province.

On 06 March 2019, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E Hidehisa Horinouchi and UN-Habitat Cambodia representative Mr Sok Vanna signed the house restoration agreement for Cambodians living in Tbong Khmum province who were affected by the 2018 floods.

According to Mr Vanna, this project is worth around 100 million Japanese Yen, about US$894,000, and will be implemented from May 2019 until March 2020.

On signing this agreement, Mr Vanna confirmed that UN-Habitat will repair or build houses for the affected people after UN-Habitat assesses the level of impact in accordance with the conditions set by UN-Habitat and the community such as type of house as well as the cost for the construction.

For now, Mr Vanna cannot confirm the number of houses to be built but said about 2000 families were affected by the flood in Tbong Khmum province at the time.

In addition, according to Mr Vanna, the project will not only build houses, but also help build citizen’s capacity so such a disaster happens again, they know what to do for evacuation to avoid such a disaster.
