Japanese Manufacturers Signal Strategic Shift Toward Cambodia as Regional Production Hub

A growing number of Japanese companies are actively exploring opportunities to relocate their production bases to Cambodia, identifying the Kingdom as a high-potential destination for new industrial investment. This strategic interest was highlighted by Professor Tetsuya Watanabe, President of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), during a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on February 9, 2026.

During the discussion, Professor Watanabe underscored Cambodia’s unique advantages in the regional landscape. He emphasized that the country is well-positioned to transform itself into a new industrial production base. Such a transition would not only drive Cambodia’s domestic economic growth but also play a critical role in enhancing the resilience of regional and global industrial supply chains.

Japanese investors are increasingly looking at Cambodia as a primary site for regional relocation. To facilitate this momentum, ERIA expressed a strong interest in organizing a Cambodia-Japan Business Forum in the near future. This platform aims to serve as a bridge, connecting more Japanese enterprises with the emerging opportunities within the Cambodian market.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the interest from the Japanese business community. He reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a favorable investment climate and supporting the integration of the Cambodian industry into broader international production networks. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in deepening the economic ties between the two nations and solidifying Cambodia’s role as a vital link in the global manufacturing sector.
