The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has handed over 1,000 Mon trees to Angkor Artisans in Puok district, Siem Reap province, to support the revival and development of traditional Khmer silk weaving handicrafts.

This handover ceremony, held on 29 August 2024 and presided over by HE Minister Dith Tina, aims to rejuvenate the ancient cultural heritage of Cambodia by enhancing local silk production capabilities.

During the ceremony, Minister Dith Tina commended Angkor Artisans for their dedication to restoring the silk weaving industry, a cornerstone of Cambodia’s cultural history. He expressed optimism for the future growth of this sector, emphasising that it would not only preserve traditional craftsmanship but also create additional employment opportunities for farmers cultivating Mon trees and raising silkworms.

The ministry also encouraged Angkor Artisans to continue improving their silk production processes, both technically and in terms of equipment, assuring them of ongoing support in the cultivation and breeding of silkworms under the ministry’s guidance and expertise.

HE Dith Tina highlighted that the growth of the silk weaving sector is vital for sustaining Cambodia’s cultural heritage while providing economic benefits to local communities.

Angkor Artisans has also revealed plans to expand their silk production by planting more mulberry trees on 15 hectares of land to meet the rising demand for Khmer silk.
