Talk on OCA Dispute Between Cambodia & Thailand to End Soon

Talks on the dispute over the overlapping claim area (OCA) in the gulf of Cambodia and Thailand has reached another level with an agreement expected to be signed soon. 

According to The Star, the Thai side raised the issue in a 20-minute cabinet meeting on 3 January. 

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan said at the meeting that he had met with Cambodia’s Minister of Mines and Energy Suy Sem last month to discuss joint development projects. on oil and gas exploration in the OCA. 

The Thai minister added that HE Suy Sem intends to implement the OCA agreement with Thailand on the condition that the two countries also discuss border sovereignty, following the example of previous agreements. 

Meanwhile, the Thai Deputy Prime Minister said the oil and gas from the OCA will enable both countries to rely on their own energy sources and develop in other areas. 

With this meeting, the Thai cabinet agreed to set up a committee to prepare and review the OCA agreement with Cambodia, chaired by the foreign minister. 

The overlapping claim area is about 26,000 square kilometres, which is estimated to hold up to 500 million barrels of oil and gas under the seabed (Read more)
