In a bid to ease traffic around the Stung Bot border checkpoint, H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has asked Japan to support the construction of a flyover at the Stung Bot intersection.

Therequest was made during a meeting between H.E. Sun Chanthol and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) mission team on 27 August. In response, Dr Masahiko Furuichi, Senior Advisor for the Transport Sector for JICA said that his team will take note of it.

However, H.E Vasim Sorya, a spokesman from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) told Construction & Property Magazine that he is positive that Japan will grant the support since this project links with the on-going project that is being supported by Japan.

He also added that after the minister made a request, it would normally take around one or two years for Japan to respond as they have to first undertake a detailed study about the project.

As explained by H.E Vasim Sorya, Japan has already supported the construction of National Road No. 5 which connects all the way to the new Cambodia-Thailand border check point, Stung Bot. The road project is divided into three sections which are still under construction. The new Cambodia-Thailand border check point is expected to finish construction by 2019.

“The new intersection flyover will help ease traffic around the border area once the border check point is in operation,” said H.E Vasim Sorya.
