MoE: Only 64% of Garbage Dumped Properly at Landfills

Of all total waste in Cambodia, only 64% is collected and properly dumped in landfills while the other 35% continues to be dumped into water sources and burned in public in an unregulated manner.

HE Net Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment, said in a meeting on 1 November that in just one year Cambodia produces more than 4 million tons of garbage, an increase of 10 to 15% year-on-year.

“60% of the waste is organic waste, 20% is plastic, and 10% is general waste. Most of the trash is not dumped properly, causing environmental issues,” said HE Net Pheaktra.

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) and its partners are currently studying the plan to set up more clean and modern landfills.

The MoE is also developing a waste management policy to make waste storage more efficient.

According to the official data, in the first seven months of 2022, more than 150 tons of garbage were collected from the river in Phnom Penh. (Read more)
