MoE Initiates Water Purifier Installations in Communities & Schools to Combat Plastic Waste

In an effort to combat the pervasive issue of plastic waste, Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment is embarking on an ambitious plan to install water purifiers in communities and schools across the nation. This eco-conscious initiative was announced by HE Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, during a pivotal meeting on 22 September 2023, with Ms. Meloney Lindberg, Country Representative of the Asia Foundation. The objective is to bolster cooperation on urban solid waste management and foster cleaner, more sustainable communities.

Minister Eang Sophalleth underscored the ministry’s commitment to reducing plastic usage by initiating campaigns such as “Today I Do Not Use Plastic Bags.” This drive emphasises the importance of cultivating cleaner households and communities, recognising their potential to attract tourists. Additionally, the provision of waste receptacles is a key priority in managing solid waste effectively.

To curb the consumption of plastic bottles, the ministry is set to distribute water purification machines to communities and schools. The rationale behind this move is to encourage individuals to utilise these machines, thereby reducing their reliance on single-use plastic bottles. By ensuring access to clean water, individuals can conveniently refill their bottles, contributing to a reduction in plastic waste.

Minister Sophalleth stressed the significance of behavioural change within communities, asserting that it plays an indispensable role in effective solid waste management. In this regard, the ministry has been engaged in educational efforts aimed at transforming negative habits into positive ones. These initiatives include discouraging practices like forest tree cutting by promoting fruit crop cultivation and eco-friendly tourism services in protected areas. These endeavours not only benefit the environment but also improve the livelihoods of local communities.

The collaboration between the Asia Foundation and Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment holds promise in advancing urban solid waste management. Their joint efforts involve comprehensive research methodologies to compile and analyse vital legal documents related to this crucial facet of environmental stewardship. Ultimately, these initiatives aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste management practices.
