Strategic aviation project covering over 1,900 hectares approved in principle to catalyze economic growth and tourism across Cambodia’s remote frontier

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially granted in-principle approval for the development of a major new airport in Ratanakiri province. This strategic initiative aims to revolutionize the economic and tourism landscape of the country’s northeastern region. Speaking in a recent interview with the Radio and Television Station on the progress of work in the second half of 2025 at the Ministry of Interior, Governor Nhem Samoeun revealed that the proposed facility will be situated in Lumphat District, spanning a significant land area of more than 1,905 hectares.

The project reflects the vision of Prime Minister Hun Manet to enhance regional connectivity and integrate remote provinces into the national logistics network. By establishing a modern aviation hub in the northeast, the government intends to attract more international tourists to the province’s unique natural wonders and cultural heritage sites. Additionally, the airport is expected to serve as a critical link for the transportation of goods, supporting local industries and agriculture. He revealed that this project will take 3 to 4 years to study its feasibility and impact, including companies from the United States participating in the study.

Currently, the project is in the comprehensive study phase to ensure environmental sustainability and technical feasibility. The provincial administration is working closely with national authorities to finalize the master plan for this landmark development. Once completed, the airport will stand as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to balanced regional development and long-term economic prosperity for the residents of Ratanakiri and the surrounding provinces.
