PM Hun Sen: US$100 million to help developing rural infrastructure while creating more jobs

The USD$100 million in rural infrastructure projects that the government is providing not only helps develop local infrastructure but also provide jobs for people.

The statement was made by Prime Minister Hun during the delivery on the “Cash Transfer Program for Poor and Vulnerable Households during COVID-19” on 24 June 2020.

The Prime Minister explained how the government had never declared the closure of the economy. On the other hand, domestic infrastructure projects such as the new Phnom Penh International Airport, which the PM had just visited, as well as the Sihanoukville Road projects, and the Mekong River Bridge project have all continued as usual during the COVID-19 crisis and have absorbed a large amount of labour.

“We allocated USD$100 million for rural development so that people can find jobs locally.  We have USD$ 100 million in cash for the labour.  People can build their own canal and dig a pond for agriculture which can benefit rural infrastructure as well as generate their own incomes,” he said.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance has just allocated 451 billion riels (approximately US$109 million) for building physical infrastructure in rural areas and promoting agriculture, particularly in the area of job creation for people affected by the virus. (Read more)
