PM Hun Sen Urges G7 Countries to Invest in Cambodia’s Infrastructure Through its B3W

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has strongly welcomed and urged the G7 countries to invest in building more infrastructure in Cambodia, especially through its newly-announced Build Back Better World (B3W) initiative.

PM Hun Sen made this remark during the inauguration of the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge Stung Trang-Krouch Chhmar and the groundbreaking ceremony of NR71C on 23 November.

The PM’s declaration to welcome G7 aid is in response to allegations saying Cambodia has relied too much on China in infrastructure development.

“I am looking forward to gaining aid from the B3W initiative and hope that the ASEAN foreign ministers and the foreign ministers of the G7 countries will give Cambodia some funds for development projects,” said PM Hun Sen.

“We do not deny any help, such as the B3W. So, do not say we are biased towards China,” he added.

The Build Back Better World (B3W) is an initiative undertaken by G7 countries. Launched in June 2021, the initiative is designed to provide an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for the infrastructure development of low and middle-income countries.

Led by the United States, the G7 countries will work to address the US$40 trillion worth of infrastructure needed by developing countries by 2035. The fund will be used for COVID-19 relief, social services, welfare, and infrastructure, and climate change mitigation projects.
