Poipet PPSEZ Opens Officially

The Poipet PP Special Economic Zone (Poipet PPSEZ), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, was officially opened for operation on 9 December in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province.

The launch ceremony was held at the same time as the official opening of Japanese firm Sumitronics which has invested in the zone.

According to a CDC press release, the opening ceremony was officiated by H.E. Sok Chandasophea, Secretary General of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and Japanese ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Masahiro Mikami.

H.E. Sok Chandasophea said that the operation of Poipet PPSEZ is part of the government vision to deploy factories along the border line and that the investment by the Japanese firm in the zone contributes to developing the industrial sector, and in particular generates jobs for Cambodian people.

The investment by two companies in Poipet city reflects the government’s policy of transforming Poipet city from a battlefield to an industrial zone and a city with development in all fields.

For his part, Japanese ambassador H.E. Masahiro Mikami said that the SEZ will attract more Japanese investments.

“High economic growth, a good investment environment, and the strategic location of Cambodia has made Cambodia an attractive investment destination for Japanese investors,” H.E. Masahiro Mikami said.

Currently, Cambodia has total 23 active SEZs with 490 factories, generating 130,000 jobs. In Poipet city alone, there are 3 SEZs with 17 factories which offer 500 jobs.
