Public ministry studies location for Kratie-Kampong Thom bridge

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) conducted a study tour on 23 July to determine the location for the bridge construction project linking Kratie and Kampong Thom provinces, which the ministry believes will significantly contribute to the transportation sector in Cambodia.

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines during the National Road No.7 inspection in Steung Treng province, Senior Minister and MPWT Minister H.E Sun Chanthol said that the ministry is looking for a favorable location for the construction of a bridge crossing the Mekong River linking Kratie and Kompong Thom provinces.

According to H.E Sun Chanthol, the bridge will be 1,761 metres long, and built under a concessional loan from the People’s Republic of China, with a construction period of two to three years.

The project is part of the 2020 development plan, though H.E Sun Chanthol said that construction would not commence before 2021.

Although the exact location is yet to be determined, H.E Sun Chanthol pointed out that the bridge may be constructed far from the city to allow Kratie to expand further in the future.

In addition to the construction of the bridge, the ministry is also studying the feasibility to construct bridges crossing the Mekong River in other provinces. In fact, the ministry is currently studying the feasibility to construct the longest bridge in Cambodia linking Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom provinces. (Read more)
