Serei Saophoan – Poipet Rail Line Completed

The construction of the railway line connecting Serei Saophoan to the Thai-border town of Poipet has been fully completed with plans to put it into service for the first time in April.

This new route not only connects the two cities in Banteay Meanchey Province, but will also connect Poipet to Bangkok on the Thai rail network, helping to ease connectivity between the two counties. At this stage, the railway will be used for freight only, not for passengers.

“After we put the railway in service, it will help boost the goods delivery between Cambodia and Thailand to be even easier, safer, and better. We plan to open that railway for service in April,” said H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport at the EuroCham Logistics Forum 2018 hosted on 13 February.

The completion of the Serei Saophoan – Poipet line is a small part of a bigger project to connect Phnom Penh to Bangkok by rail. Connecting Phnom Penh to the Thai border is considered one of the key parts of Cambodia’s logistic master plan and is also is a part of the eastern corridor of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link, that aims to improve the connectivity among ASEAN members.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has yet to confirm however when the whole project will be completed.
