Siem Reap Takes Serious Action Against Air Pollution with New Measures

Siem Reap provincial authorities have implemented a series of measures aimed at reducing air pollution in the area. In a recent instruction dated 7 March 2023, the province has set out specific steps to prevent and control air pollution in the region.

Among the measures included in the instruction are:

  • Measures to prevent forest fires, grassland fires, garbage incineration, and solid waste incineration in landfills and construction sites.
  • Business owners in the construction sector have been instructed to take measures to prevent dust from being released into the air and control waste discharge.
  • In addition, those transporting soil, stone, and sand for construction purposes must ensure that their loads are covered to avoid spills or falls on the road.
  • The project owner or recipient of any type of road construction project must also apply irrigation regularly.
  • According to the instruction, vehicle emissions will also be monitored more closely, with inspections based on the standards set by the Ministry of Environment.
  • The city cleaning company must regularly clean and wash the main streets in Siem Reap city.

In order to ensure the success of these measures, all stakeholders, including authorities at all levels, company owners, business owners, restaurant owners, and the public, must participate in the implementation process.

Those who do not comply with the measures, particularly business owners in the construction sector, will face temporary suspension of their business and further legal action.

The new measures are expected to significantly impact the reduction of air pollution in the region, ensuring a healthier environment for residents and visitors alike.
